It was the thing that everybody expected to happen sooner rather then later, but it never was official. Well, now it is: Electronic Arts have officially announced that Harmonix' Rock Band is going to come to the Nintendo Wii consoles as well. And it was about the time, since the game is already available for all the major consoles like PlayStation 2 and 3 or the Xbox 360.

EA's CEO John Riccitiello made a passing mention of the Wii edition during a conference call today. He also revealed that the Europeans will receive the PS2, PS3 and X360 versions of the game in the first quarter of the company's fiscal year, which means that is is going to happen sometime during the 1st of April and the 30th of June this year.

John Riccitiello added: "What are probably the most interesting pieces [of the Rock Band business] right now is the coming launch on the Wii, the continued sales of the core platforms in North America and then [Rock Band's] fiscal '09 launch across Europe against all the SKUs. Frankly, for the balance of our Q4, and the first half of fiscal '09, Rock Band's a key focus."

However, no other details were disclosed, such as a release date or pricing information. Also, there were no details regarding Rock Band's Wii developer - since Pi Studios have released the PlayStation 2 edition, Harmonix is not a sure call here. Just stay tuned, we'll keep you informed as soon as new details pop out.

According to EA, since the late 2007 release, the game has sold 1.5 million units in North America. Rock Band allows gamers to perform music from the world's biggest rock artists with their friends as a virtual band using drum, bass/lead guitar and microphone peripherals, in addition to offering deep online connectivity.
