Researchers have shown that swarming may be the result of simple laws

All animals move in swarms, in fact, not just animals, but even bacteria and material inside bacteria. But why they do it and how it works has been a cause for controversy for ages.

Now, research by a team at Harvard University has shown that the coordinated motions don't even rely on intelligence or any sort of active process, but may be the simple result of particle motion in a confined space.

The team built very simple robots that have no logic or programming, they either move in a relatively straight line or in a circular motion. Their behavior is only governed by their shape.

What the team found is that for both type of robots, after a critical number was reached, they started showing the same swarming behavior observed in countless animals.
