One of the most appreciated funnymen in showbiz, known for both his comedies and the more serious roles, Robin Williams has just cut short his 80-date tour of the US to have heart surgery, his publicist has announced. The 57-year-old actor was taken to the hospital after complaining of breathing problems yesterday, and has been put on bed rest until after surgery, several media outlets are reporting.

The actor fell ill yesterday and was taken to the hospital. Once there, doctors told him he was in need of an aortic valve replacement, and advised him against touring and straining himself. Although he postponed the remainder of his one-man tour, “Weapons of Self-Destruction,” a statement released by Williams himself shows that he continues to be in good spirits, and is incredibly touched by the amazing support he’s been receiving from fans since word broke out in the media.

“I’m so touched by everyone’s support and well wishes. This tour has been amazing fun and I can’t wait to get back out on the road after a little tune-up.” Robin Williams jokingly said in the press statement announcing the postponement of the tour. The exact date when he will be having surgery or further details on his condition have not been made available to the media up to this moment. As noted above, he will hopefully be able to resume touring this fall, if all goes well.

In the summer of 2006, Robin William’s absence from the premiere of one of his movies sparked talk about him having fallen off the wagon. His publicist, Mara Buxbaum, revealed later that Williams had, indeed, started drinking again after staying almost 20 years sober. For the sake of his own wellbeing but also for that of his family, Williams willingly admitted himself into a rehab clinic, where he spent two months kicking the habit.
