One of the key figures in Sony Pictures’ new Spider-Man trilogy has just confirmed he will not be involved on the threequel. Roberto Orci, who worked on the script for both “The Amazing Spider-Men” films, is moving to greener pastures, to make his directorial debut on “Star Trek 3.”

This means that he’s no longer involved in “The Amazing Spider-Man 3,” for which Sony was eyeing a 2016 release that might not happen as scheduled now, word online has it.

In fact, if we’re to believe the worst scenarios making the rounds online, the threequel might never see the light of day at all or, if it does, it will certainly not pave the way for spinoffs with Sinister Six or Venom, as Sony planned.

“I don't know what their plans are for that franchise. I don't ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie. I've read probably as much as anyone else,” Orci tells IGN, confirming he’s not involved in the treequel anymore.

“Spider-Man's not going to go away any time soon. When it all happens and how and all that has yet to be determined. I don't want to say anything about what they should do. I don't want them to think I'm spilling the beans about something,” he adds.

Yes, Spider-Man is popular, but not this Spider-Man. Despite solid reviews from critics, who seem to have fallen head over heels in love with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in their roles, the first two installments failed to perform as expected at the box office.

Because of this, “The Amazing Spider-Man” is considered a flop, especially if compared to Sam Raimi’s trilogy. The last thing the franchise needed right now is to lose Orci. So no wonder people are saying right now that this is the end for this franchise, at least for the time being.
