Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen in the “Twilight” films, the second of which drops just weeks from today, on November 20, is the best and most popular vampire in moviedom, a survey by ad agency Pearl & Dean has revealed, as ReelLoop can confirm. In his race to the top spot, Edward Cullen blasted past competition that included Lestat, Blade and the classic Nosferatu.

Although the results of the poll can’t possibly surprise younger audiences, those not included in the target group for the “Twilight” films are certainly taken aback, as also is the case of the editors at the aforementioned movie-oriented publication. Not that Cullen would not be a good vampire in the sense that he doesn’t meet the standards we’ve come to expect from one such undead creature, they say, but rather because the likes of Lestat, Dracula and Nosferatu are perhaps scarier, therefore better at being undead “icons.”

Of the 3,000 moviegoers who voted online for the chart of the ten hottest vampires of all times, 38 percent chose Edward for the top spot. Christopher Lee’s Dracula from the “Hammer Horror” film came in second, while Wesley Snipes was voted third for his part as a new breed of vampire in the “Blade” trilogy. Lestat, played by Tom Cruise in “Interview With the Vampire,” came in at number four, while Gary Oldman ranked in fifth as Dracula in “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.”

Kate Beckinsale came in at number six as the leather catsuit-dressed Selene in the “Underworld” films, while Kiefer Sutherland secured the seventh position with David in “The Lost Boys.” The final positions of the chart went to Salma Hayek as Santanico Pandermonium in “From Dusk Till Dawn,” Max Schreck as Graf Orlok in “Nosferatu” and Bela Lugosi as Dracula in the original “Dracula.”

“People love to be scared witless, particularly at this time of year.” Pearl & Dean CEO Kathryn Jacob says in a press statement of the results of the online survey as regards the top ten vampires in the history of cinema. “Edward Cullen being voted firm favorite movie vampire is testament to the fact that people still enjoy a good bloodsucker.” Jacob adds.
