Robert Pattinson promised solemnly that he was going to stay away from big budget movies after the “Twilight” saga brought him fame and fortune, as well as a lasting relationship with the tabloids thanks to his relationship with fellow actress Kristen Stewart. Now Disney wants to test his resolve by offering him the part of Indiana Jones.

That's not a role that you can just refuse and the Daily Star is reporting that the studio is actively pursuing the idea that the British actor could be the next Indiana Jones, to replace the aging Harrison Ford.

So far, the role has been up for grabs, and the names that were being rumored as the most likely to replace Ford had Bradley Cooper on the top of the list. Now, it seems that the studio is also looking on the other side of the Atlantic, at some British talent.

“Disney is looking at its long-term options for the Indiana Jones franchise,” a source from the studio dished. “They feel that the series has huge potential on many levels, starting with the films leading to other spin-offs like games which can generate more money than movies,” it added.

We find out that “Rob is top of the initial list because he has showed his acting stripes away from Twilight. But the competition will be stiff.” The source doesn't mention any other names on the list, which is pretty strange.

It could be just a way to name-drop Pattinson in the news, knowing that he's still a pretty big name that draws the attention of fans. Lately, the actor has seemed reluctant to take on big Hollywood roles, preferring to be involved in much smaller yet artier projects.

Most recently, he has two movies premiering at this year's Cannes Film Festival, “The Rover” and “The Fault in Our Stars,” both of which earned him the respect and admiration of critics, who had previously seen him as merely “that boy from Harry Potter and Twilight.”

There is no doubt that Disney will want to continue a franchise so lucrative as “Indiana Jones,” but casting the right actor to take the adventuring archaeologist into the next century is going to take a lot of planning and cunning.

After the commercial flop that the latest Indiana Jones movie turned out to be, Disney is going to take its time in casting the role and writing the script, but it's going to be interesting to watch and see who lands the role in the end.

Who would you like to see star as Indiana Jones? Robert Pattinson or Bradley Cooper?
