It’s so hard to get Robert Pattinson talking, even when he’s on a mission to promote one of his films, it has often been said. Even harder than that is to book the British actor for an interview to push his upcoming film, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” since he likes to think of it as one where he plays a “supporting” role. The Sydney Morning Herald seems to have done the impossible on both counts.

While in Paris on “New Moon”-promo duties, SMH caught up with the star to get him to open up a bit about how fame had changed his life – more specifically, about whether he got more girls now that he was famous, or not. As strange as this may sound, no, Robert Pattinson still cannot get a date, he says for the publication, which is almost unbelievable, since he’s so beautiful, with his perfect features that hark back memories of a young Johnny Depp who could not rid himself of the heartthrob tag attached to him.

“To be honest, I still don’t really understand what’s going on. Like yesterday, I was having lunch down the road. We were in this place for a couple of hours and suddenly there was like 400 people outside on the street. It was just so nuts and it’s like that all the time now. When the second [film] comes out, then I'll see how I am. Mostly I can ignore things to quite a big extent and kind of pretend they’re not really happening. I just don’t take any of it seriously. It’s just a job and while it’s a job I love, girls scream out for Edward, not Robert. I still can’t get a date.” Robert tells the interviewer, as he’s anxiously running his hand through his hair.

It’s clear that, deep down inside, he hopes “New Moon” will not add more fuel to the fire that is known as the “Rob-mania,” because he chooses to believe attention will be somewhat diverted towards Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob Black and has more onscreen time in “New Moon” than even Edward Cullen. Of course, that’s not to say that this will actually happen: Pattinson’s fans are reportedly the most devoted of the lot, and they’re unlikely to let go of that idol that quickly.

“I’m not the lead in the second film. Taylor [Lautner] is. I appear in Bella’s dreams. So I’m in it but the focus is not on me. I just have significant moments at the beginning... and the end. So I’m more of a supporting role in this one, which is why I felt so free. I didn’t have to deal with any of the [expletive] of the first one. I don’t have to hold the movie or worry about the fans. I think I did it better without all those pressures.” Pattinson says for SMH.

One thing that Pattinson is certain of right now, though, is that the world will not remember him as “that vampire guy.” Right now, he’s choosing parts that are as different from that of Edward in the “Twilight” series as possible, just to make sure he won’t be typecast. It will happen, and he will manage to break free of the Edward image, Robert assures the interviewer.
