Robbie Williams, though nominated for Best Male at this year’s Brit Awards ceremony, which took place the other night in London, walked away with the biggest distinction of the night, that which recognized his outstanding contribution to music. The singer was presented with the Lifetime Achievement award and closed the ceremony with a gorgeous medley of his biggest hits, as the BBC informs.

Williams himself seemed somewhat overwhelmed by having been thus honored by the recording industry in the UK, being apparently unable to come to terms with it and not ceasing to say “Thank You.” However, the best thanks he could have offered – and which he actually did – was by taking to the stage and performing a medley of his greatest hits, including one he had back in his Take That days, “Everything Changes.”

“Robbie Williams received the lifetime achievement honor and his performance, a career-spanning medley of hits, was the highlight of the night for many inside Earls Court. After the lukewarm reactions to his last two albums, it was a forceful reminder of just what a massive star he is, or was. It is also the first time in a while that he has had the chance to remind us that his best anthems were huge, euphoric, communal and enduring pop landmarks,” the BBC says.

And, while the hits that Williams used to make will remain for ever in history as true masterpieces, it is somewhat sad to notice that audiences need reminding of them, the same media outlet goes on to say. The BBC also sees Robbie getting the Lifetime Achievement award, especially in a context in which he clearly stood zero chances of winning Best Male even given how well critics received his latest album, “Reality Killed the Video Star,” as a clear sign that his best days are now gone.

“The fact that we needed reminding was also a bit sad because it means it must have been so long since he has had one of those mega hits. Robbie was nominated for best male too this year but was never likely to win. The lifetime achievement is often bestowed on those whose best days are behind them. Will he be picking up more Brit awards in years to come?” the BBC asks. Regardless of whether he’ll be winning any Brits in the future or not, there is little doubt that his closing act was the highlight of the evening.
