It's a massive surprise for the producers of buddy-cop comedy “Ride Along” as they were announced as the No. 1 film in the box office this weekend. It was an ever bigger surprise when the movie went on to break the top-grossing record during the MLK (Martin Luther King) weekend.

Imagine their surprise when their movie also managed to be crowned as the top grossing Friday-Sunday January opener in history. That must have been one hell of a party at Universal Studios.

The film follows the story of security guard Ben Barber, played by Hart, who plans to wed the sister of a tough APD detective, played by Ice Cube. The two go on a ride-along together and comedy ensues as the rookie tries to impress his future brother-in-law.

Despite costing just $25 million (€18.4 million) to produce, the film went on to make $41.2 million (€30,4 million) in its first weekend, shattering the previous record from 2008 held by “Cloverfield.” The movie also gets a rare A Grade from CinemaScore, despite numerous critics giving it low marks.

“Ride Along” comes to replace the movie “Lone Survivor” at the top of the box-office. They are followed by “The Nut Job” and “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.”
