Recently, more and more people talk about the Restless Legs Syndrome, even if they are patients that suffer from this disorder or doctors that think of different ways in which to treat it. Until a few years ago, some of us used to think that if they had restless feet while sleeping this was by accident and they could not think that this may be really a condition. But medical experts have carried out various studies and showed that restless legs is a syndrome and is quite common in people, especially in old individuals.

Restless Legs Syndrome is closely linked to sleeping disorders because it usually occurs when lying or sleeping. Usually, patients that suffer from this syndrome develop a discomfort at the level of posterior limbs felt as burning, itching, crawling and even pain sensations. It is a strong, uncontrollable urge to move the legs that you cannot dominate.

The sensations that make one move the legs become worse when resting or sleeping. And the longer he rests or sleeps, the severer the sensations will be. The most annoying thing is that someone gives up sleeping or resting in order to move his feet and to get rid of the creepy-crawly sensations in his legs, the symptoms will disappear completely or partially for a couple of minutes, but then they will come again to haunt the sufferer.

Restless Legs Syndrome is usually associated with other disorders, mostly emotional, such as: sleep problems or insomnia, depression, impatience, nervousness and day-time sleepiness.

Causes that lead to suffering from this syndrome relate to heredity or to other health disorders or conditions, such as: diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lack of iron in the body, kidney problems, damaged nerves in the limbs etc.

The diagnoses of the syndrome is very simple and does not require seeing a specialist, as it can be traced down by the person on his/her own or by the sleep partners during night.

Until now a cure for this syndrome has not been developed by scientists. However, if and individual suffers from this restlessness problem, he could try some simple remedies like: taking a warm bath and using aromatic oils in the tube water in order to release the senses and calm down the sensations in the legs, massaging with a soothing ointment the legs, especially the calves, moderate exercise early in the morning, but not too strenuous, cold compresses applied on the limbs, taking a mild pain reliever before bedtime etc. And there are always the complementary therapies that can induce the patient relaxation states. However, if the syndrome aggravates, a doctor should be consulted.
