Sony's Resistance first-person shooter franchise is getting ready to see its third Playstation 3 installment be released next month, in the form of Resistance 3, but Insomniac Games, the actual developer of the series, isn't too sure it's going to return for a fourth title.

Insomniac Games developed quite a lot of high-quality games for Sony platforms, but last year it decided to break this tradition and start working on a new project, called Overstrike, together with Electronic Arts, set to be published for all platforms, not just Sony ones.

Now, the studio is branching out, trying to put the finishing touches on Resistance 3, as well as Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, which will appear just for the PS3, and is working hard on Overstrike, the multiplatform shooter that will be published by EA.

As such, with so many projects, Insomniac creative director Marcus Smith isn't so sure about the studio returning to its Resistance series a fourth time.

"We've got three different games with very different focuses. We're kind of going in a lot of different directions. Ted Price, Alex and Brian Hastings, the owners, have been doing this for a long time - something like 15 years of doing Sony exclusive games - and they're just interested in doing other things... I think we're thriving and branching out in a lot of different directions," Smith explained to Gaming Union.

"We've done Resistance 3 and we're really into it and proud of it, but we're not currently slated to do a Resistance 4," he added. "We've got a lot of different places for the universe to go, so I could certainly see the series going to another developer. I'm sure Sony would want to find a high calibre developer to do a good offering. I don't think they'd hand the franchise over to somebody who is going to screw it up."

Sony already let other studios develop entries in the Resistance series, as the PSP exclusive Resistance: Retribution was made by Sony Bend, while Nihilistic is now working on Resistance: Burning Skies, for the upcoming PlayStation Vita.

What do you think? Is it time for a new studio to have a go at the Resistance series, or should Insomniac keep working on the franchise it developed?
