The boss of the development team at Insomniac working on the shooter Resistance 3 has said that the game will probably not be the last one in the series, although the company is also working on a variety of other projects.

Presumably the future of Resistance will depend heavily upon the sales performance on the upcoming game, which will be launched exclusively on the PlayStation 3 from Sony at some point during 2011.

Talking to Game Informer Ted Price, who is the leader of the Insomniac development studio, has answered a question about Resistance 3 ending the franchise by saying, “I don’t think so. I think Resistance 3 is a story within the Resistance universe that can be expanded upon.”

He added, “Doors will be shut, but they won’t be slammed.”

Resistance 3 was first shown off at the Gamescom trade event in Cologne this summer and will tell the story of a new main character, Joseph Capelli, who has been introduced in the previous game in the series and has since started a family, with Susan, the step sister of former leading hero Nathan Hale.

The story of the game sees the entire world dominated by the Chimera, with the remaining human simulation actually reduced to cannibalism to survive.

Capelli will go through a variety of iconic American cities, like St. Louis and New York City and will meet up with some familiar old faces, although Insomniac has not stated whether Hale will make an appearance.

The game mechanics have also been upgraded, with players able to move more easily through the environment and some of the old weapons of the series joined by additions like the Mutator, which launches a sort of biological mist that makes enemies explode.

Resistance 3 is also set to deliver a cooperative game mode although it's not clear if it will follow the same narrative as the single player.
