After a lackluster reveal courtesy of a game magazine yesterday, Capcom has finally decided to confirm its next game, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, which will appear this winter.

Capcom is definitely celebrating the 15th anniversary of its highly successful Resident Evil franchise with a bang this year, and has already confirmed that it will be bringing two older titles, Resident Evil: Code: Veronica X and Resident Evil 4 as high definition remakes later this year.

Besides those two titles, Capcom is also making its presence felt on the Nintendo 3DS, bringing Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D in the following months and Resident Evil: Revelations later this year.

Now, a full pledged Resident Evil game is also on the way, as Capcom has officially confirmed that it is working together with Slant Six Games on Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.

The game, as we revealed yesterday, is a team-based third-person shooter, taking the franchise into a whole new direction, as opposed to previous titles.

"Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City delivers a true third person team based shooter experience set within the dark and sinister Resident Evil universe and a reinterpretation of the events depicted in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. The setting of the Resident Evil universe not only provides a rich backdrop to the action but delivers a unique and thrilling triple threat battle," Capcom revealed.

Gamers will play as soldiers of the Umbrella Security Services (USS), who are sent to cover up or destroy any evidence linking the pharmaceutical corporation to the disaster. They'll be faced not only with zombies and bio-organic weapons, who are still alive after the outbreak, but also special forces soldiers sent by the US government to find the evidence that confirms Umbrella's involvement in the disaster.

Players can either take on the game alone or through the four-player cooperative mode, and have a chance of rewriting the history of the Raccoon City outbreak, at least according to Capcom, by interacting with objects and characters like Resident Evil 2 protagonist Leon Kennedy.

Special competitive online modes will also be included, each banking on the unique three-way battle between USS, US Spec Ops and the monsters left behind by the outbreak.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is expected on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this winter, which may not necessarily mean that we'll get it during the 2011 calendar year.
