Capcom's Resident Evil 4, or Biohazard 4, as it is known in Japan, is now available on Steam in an enhanced HD edition, featuring greatly increased visual fidelity and all the bonus content released for the game until now.

First launched in 2005 on the Nintendo GameCube, the game quickly gained traction and is widely considered one of the best in the series. Critics considered it one of the top contenders for the Game of the Year title, and it was believed to have been a strong influence on the third-person shooter genre.

Its popularity saw an ever-increasing demand for the game to make it to other hardware as well, which Capcom was happy to oblige, culminating with the 2011 release of the HD version of the title for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 home entertainment systems.

Now, the revamped version makes it to the PC for the first time, coming in stunning HD and running at 60 frames per second, after suffering a complete graphical overhaul that brings the popular Resident Evil 4 to its best visual quality ever.

Resident Evil 4 has players take on the role of special agent Leon S. Kennedy, who is sent on a mission to rescue the president's daughter from her kidnappers. Eventually finding his way to a rural European setting, he is faced with new threats, taking a break from the series' usual lumbering zombies.

Leon will have to battle new enemies, some horrific creatures infested by a new threat called Las Plagas, and will face more aggressive enemies, including mind-controlled villagers that serve Los Illuminados, the mystical and mysterious cult behind the U.S. President's daughter's abduction.

The PC version of the game is fully optimized for wide screens, text has been sharpened and textures have been upgraded, for both characters, items and background. The release also comes with full support of Steam Cloud, Steam Trading Cards, Steam Achievements, global leaderboards and game controller support, as well as native keyboard and mouse support with customizable key binding, sensitivity and acceleration options.

The new PC version of Resident Evil 4 includes all content from prior iterations of the game, including subtitle support for English, French, Italian, German and Spanish, as well as all the previously released bonus content such as the Separate Ways Epilogue.

The Capcom Unity blog has a nice feature, a texture comparison slider gallery comparing the old textures to the new HD ones, which clearly shows the massive improvement in visual quality.

Resident Evil 4 is available on Steam for all regions, going for €20 / $27.
