The ASPCA (American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has announced that a rescued pooch by the name Xena and an adorable kitten named Koshka are to be "crowned" Dog and Cat of the Year.

The official "coronation" ceremony was scheduled to take place this Thursday at the Humane Awards in NYC, Today reports.

Both Koshka and Xena were rescued after suffering terrible abuse, and, thanks to their fun personalities, both found new, loving homes sooner than expected.

Xena now lives with an autistic boy named Jonny Hickey, and is a most loyal companion. Every once in a while, she visits a 12-year-old girl diagnosed with cancer at a hospital in Atlanta.

Koshka arrived in the US all the way from Afghanistan, and now lives with Staff Sgt. Jesse Knott's family in Oregon. He was the one who brought the cat to the country after the two bonded surprisingly well and kept each other company in Afghanistan.
