LucasArts has sent word that it is planning to release a new Star Wars-themed videogame. The name is set to be Star Wars Clone Wars: Republic Heroes, which is a bit of a mouthful, and should be developed by Krome Studios.

The game should arrive on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, the PC, the PlayStation 2, the Nintendo Wii, the DS and the PlayStation Portable. It seems that LucasArts is aiming to get Republic Heroes out on all possible platforms, so maybe an iPhone version will also be announced soon.

LucasArts is saying that the new game is meant to bridge the gap between the first and the second season of the Clone Wars animated series that has proved to be a run away success.

Apparently, the player will be able to get into the roles of both Jedi Knights and Clone Troopers, and 30 missions will be offered. The Nintendo DS version of Republic Heroes will have an expanded story line that is also said to portray some events from the first season of the Clone Wars series.

Star Wars Clone Wars: Republic Heroes will allow the player to use characters like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ashoka Tano, Mace Windu and Kit Fitso, while also permitting for two player co operative play and introducing challenges, which pit players against one another.

Darrell Rodriguez, who is the president of LucasArts, said that “The Clone Wars franchise has struck a chord with viewers and gamers around the world with its action-packed storyline and memorable heroes. With its Jedi and Clone Trooper gameplay and all-new storyline, Star Wars The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes takes the franchise into a truly exciting and interactive direction.”

LucasArts is surely looking to replicate the success of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which was released in 2008 and, despite lack of critical acclaim, managed to sell very well.
