The team tried to create a solid and interesting female lead

Developer Dontnod Entertainment says that it is not trying to make a political statement by making a strong woman the protagonist of its upcoming Remember Me, but simply to create an experience that will appeal to the fan base.

Jean-Maxime Moris, the creative director working on the game, tells Shacknews that, “You have to avoid the pitfalls of making her just a damsel in distress or a sex bomb, because this is what you think would appeal most to the hordes of men that constitute your fan base.”

He adds, “if you respect your public, then you refuse to dumb your work down, and eventually it pays back because what you do is different. But I’m not saying we’re the only ones. I’m quite happy to see that more and more games feature female protagonists.”

Jean-Maxime Moris believes that the gaming world has more work to do when it comes to gender equality and he is happy to see that Dontnod has created a world where women hold a few very important positions.

A number of developers have recently talked about the importance of female protagonists in video games, including the writer linked to the Mass Effect series at BioWare.

Recently, a new fan petition emerged asking EA Sports to include female players in the upcoming FIFA 14, although it’s unlikely that the request will be accommodated by the development team.

Remember Me is set to arrive on June 4 in North America and on June 7 in Europe, playable on the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the PC and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.

The game will allow players to control Nilin, a memory hunter who prowls the streets of Paris in 2084.

Her employer has erased her memory to eliminate vital information and players will have to use stealth and action mechanics in order to get them all back.
