Waits for Microsoft’s approval for the sequel

In a recent interview, Oskari Häkkinen, head of franchise development at Remedy Entertainment, expressed once again his company’s wish to develop a sequel to Alan Wake. He also said that he did not see any reason for the collaboration with Microsoft to end or for Alan Wake 2 to not exist. For the time being, however, Remedy is hard at work on downloadable content packs for the original.

Asked by Eurogamer whether there was a sequel inbound for Alan Wake, Häkkinen replied that, “For both our publisher Microsoft and for Remedy, we're still in a launch phase. The game just came out. We are still monitoring the main game. Being in this launch phase at the moment, we haven't had a chance to get out to Redmond, Microsoft Game Studios, and discuss anything further of how we move on. But I don't see any reason why we wouldn't continue with Microsoft with a full-blown sequel for Alan Wake.We definitely want to do it. We have great ideas for it. I can see Mikko here twiddling his thumbs with his ideas for Alan Wake 2.”

He continued to comment that the potential follow-up would still be a Microsoft exclusive title, so the only platforms his team could think about were the Windows PC and the Xbox 360. While they are not developing any Alan Wake title for the PC because of the small size of the studio, he did not exclude the possibility for future ports.

Alan Wake did not manage to achieve an impressive performance when it launched back in May. Remedy has attributed this relative failure to the fact that the game was launched in the same window with Red Dead Redemption and that it would sell better in time. Microsoft has not asked for a sequel yet, as it is waiting to see if the many packs of DLC that will come out for this first installment will be successful.
