The iPhone Dev Team is at it again, this time with an update to their redsn0w utility for Mac and Windows that promises to jailbreak the latest iOS beta from Apple, though still not providing an ‘untethered’ hack.

Announced in fashionable manner (on Twitter) by the team’s most vocal member, Musclenerd, redsn0w 0.9.8b6 "Jetblue edition" provides what is known as a ‘tethered’ jailbreak.

This means that keeping a jailbreak going will require the user to tether the device to a computer running redsn0w each time the device needs to reboot (or loses power).

The tweet from Musclenerd reads, “redsn0w 0.9.8b6 ‘Jetblue edition’ tethered JB released for iOS 5 beta6. Please see update #6 notes,” and is followed by a link that takes users to the official Dev-Team blog.

“We’ve released redsn0w 0.9.8b6 to jailbreak iOS5 beta6 (point it directly at the beta6 IPSW),” reads the official update.

The team stresses that there are two important aspects about this release. In the Team’s own words:

(1) Please let your device boot normally to IOS5b6 and do a clean shutdown (slide to power off) before jailbreaking.

(2) Boot logos have intentionally been disabled for now, so you’ll see a black screen on tethered boots (you can re-enable logos or verbose boot with command-line options if you really want them back).

The Team adds that it is very important to do a clean shutdown before running redsn0w, due to increased sensitivity to abrupt file system shutdowns in the latest beta from Apple.

Earlier today, Softpedia reported that iPhone hacker iH8Sn0w had released his own jailbreak tool for developers running iOS 5 Beta 6 which also provides a ‘tethered’ hack.

Unlike iH8Sn0w’s tool, however, the Dev-Team’s redsn0w can also be run on Mac OS X, not just Windows PCs.
