Ambrosia Software has released Redline 1.0.5, an update to its online racing game for Mac. Since clients of versions older than 1.0.3 cannot join Redline 1.0.5 multiplayer games because of newer functionality, Redline 1.0.5 is “a highly recommended update,” Ambrosia points out.

Redline is a simple but addictive online racing game, which sports an Arcade mode of play, but also a Simulation style gameplay option. The latter has players rushing down the racing track, trying to go by the best line on tight corners and S-band turns. Thanks to the numerous cars and tracks, players “jump into a racing game that delivers adrenaline via digital injection,” Ambrosia claims. The graphics aren't half bad, nor are the sound effects. The level of detail however, and the damage system are pretty outdated for this day and age.

All this being said, the new version of the game includes numerous enhancements and bug fixes including:

• Integrated enhanced Ambrosia registration system; • Custom cars can specify RPMs for shifting up and engaging the clutch; • Redline can now list more than 64 different tracks; • Replays with missing plug-in cars will no longer crash the game; • Will now optionally look for Plug-Ins in ~/Application Support/ Redline/ and save redlogs there as well (it will still make use of Plug-Ins located at the same directory as the Redline.app); • Switches over to incremental Sparkle for future updates.

Various other enhancements and bug fixes have also been included in version 1.0.5, the development team notes. Again, those who've bought the game and have an older version than 1.0.3 are strongly advised to install this new update, as the newly-added functionality will not allow them to compete against others online anymore.

Following this link you can download and install the 1.0.5 update right now, or, if you don't yet own Ambrosia's online racing title, you can download a 30-day trial version. Most of the cars and tracks are locked in the trial version, but it is enough to get a good idea of what the game is all about. Redline requires Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later, and is a Universal Binary. The full game costs US$25.00 to buy.
