Ubisoft has finally confirmed the release date for the much delayed Red Steel 2 for the Nintendo Wii. The videogame is set to arrive in North America on March 23 and three days later (publishers seem to love this three-day period) in Europe. There are two editions of Red Steel 2 players can pick up.

The 50-dollar one will only get you the game while paying 10 dollars more also delivers a Motion Plus add-on for the Wiimote, which makes cutting up enemies with a sword somewhat easier. Pre-orders made at the GameStop chain will bring players two new swords to use in game.

Red Steel 2 is set to take place in a town called Caldera, which seems to be sitting at a nexus in space allowing it to attract elements of Western-themed movies but also themes usually linked with Samurai films.

The main inspiration for the developers seems to be the revenge type of movie, which has notable representation in both the Western and the Samurai genres. The main character will be wearing a wide brimmed cowboy hat as he assaults enemies with his deadly katana.

Red Steel 2 will use the Motion Plus add-on in order to allow elements like the power of the swing to count when making a hit on an enemy. Gun play will also be in the game and Ubisoft promises that the two types of weapons will be balanced to allow both slashing and run and gunning as possible paths through the game.

One disappointment for some players will be the lack of actual blood and sword cutting in the game, which aimed for a Teen rating and received it at the price of letting go of its Kill Bill elements. Red Steel 2 is a gamble on the Wii, and Ubisoft will see how it turns out in late March.
