Sony issues no comment

Last week, an advertisement appeared, listing a number of accessories that were said to work with a whole array of PlayStation Portable variants, including the PSP-4000, a model Sony has not announced officially. A lot of people wondered whether the company leaked some information related to a new handheld or whether we are simply dealing with a typo in the ad.

Now, Accessories4Technology, the firm that put together the ad and is also creating the products mentioned in it, has told Negative Gamer it’s all a matter of “a mistake on our part.”

The company does not have any knowledge regarding the creation of a new handheld console and Sony is continuing to say that it does no comment on any rumors and speculation related to its future plans.

What is pretty clear is that the PlayStation Portable Go, which was released in the latter half of 2009, has not been able to make an impact on the hardware market, especially not of the size that the Nintendo DSi and DSi LL managed when they came out.

The digital-only nature of the new device, which does not have a UMD drive, has not received the number of titles players were expecting and Sony has also been slow in offering them a chance to get for free those titles that they have already bought on a physical medium.

The company has repeatedly said that it has not abandoned the traditional PSP line and that it plans to create a new version of the device, which might arrive in 2010, especially with the limited performance of the Go. If it manages to keep the UMD drive while also introducing a better screen and a more powerful battery, then it might have a best seller on its hands, especially if paired with a big videogame release.
