With the awards season looming in, it’s time for audiences to brace themselves for the finest selection of the worst the movie industry has to offer as well. The shortlist for Worst Picture at the Golden Raspberry Awards, or the Razzies, has been released.

The Razzies, as moviegoers must know, go a long way back and, just like the Oscars they mimic, they represent a celebration of films released in the year that’s passed.

The only difference is, of course, that while Academy Awards celebrate excellence, the Razzies “honor” suckiness, with such categories like Worst Picture, Worst Actor and Actress, Worst Onscreen Pair and the newly introduced Worst Eye-Gouging Misuse of 3-D.

MovieFone reports that the shortlist for Worst Picture has been released, in anticipation of the unveiling of the nominees in all categories, which should happen later this month, on January 24, more exactly.

“The 12 finalists include ‘Little Fockers,’ ‘SATC 2,’ ‘The Expendables,’ ‘Grown Ups,’ ‘Clash of the Titans,’ ‘Killers,’ ‘The Bounty Hunter,’ ‘Yogi Bear,’ ‘Jonah Hex,’ ‘The Last Airbender,’ ‘Vampires Suck,’ and ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’,” MF writes.

Since this is the first indication of the films that will be “dishonored” at this year’s Razzies, speculation on the other releases and the actors who will make the cut has already started making the rounds.

The critically panned “Burlesque,” for instance, did not make the shortlist of possible Worst Picture contenders but not everything is lost.

“‘Burlesque’ is at least shortlisted for six other categories, including potential acting (dis)honors for Cher, Christina Aguilera, Cam Gigandet and Kristen Bell,” MF says.

“Other possible names to be nominated include Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Emily Blunt, George Lopez and Angelina Jolie, who ironically could be nominated for ‘The Tourist,’ in spite of her Golden Globe nomination for the same role,” the e-zine further says.

As also noted above, this year, the Razzies also include a special 3D category, which became necessary when movies added 3D in their name to justify a premium ticket – but the quality of 3D was deplorable at least.

Here, we could see nominees like “Piranha 3D,” “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” “The Nutcracker in 3D” and perhaps even “The Last Airbender” and the box office success “Clash of the Titans.”

For full list of nominees in all the categories at the 2011 Razzies, keep an eye on this space – it’s out on January 24.
