Rayman Origins has received its first actual details, confirming that this long-rumored project is still being developed by Ubisoft.

Game Informer magazine ran a wide cover story on Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Revelations, but also reserved space for Rayman Origins, an often-rumored game, which received a single trailer and a few details last year, before the E3 conference.

Now, the details from the magazine have been spilled on a thread found on the NeoGAF forums, and it seems that Ubisoft wants to make Rayman Origins a full-pledged retail release, not just a downloadable title, as it was previously planned.

The game will be a real sequel to the original Rayman, a fun platformer that spawned off a hugely successful franchise for the French company in the form of the Raving Rabbids one.

Now, the focus is back on Rayman, who will appear on platforms like the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 in Origins later this year.

According to Rayman creator Michael Ancel, few people actually finished the original game, so the team wants to make Origins more accessible, but also offer a challenge to experienced platformer players.

The new game also aims at satisfying different types of gamers, ranging from those that want to carefully explore levels and collect every item to those who want to blaze through them in order to get the fastest time.

Rayman will once again need to collect Lums, not only for his score count, but also in order to trade them for powerups, health or "I Dare You" challenges, where players bet on themselves before trying to complete certain acrobatic moves or levels.

Rayman Origins has a 4-player local cooperative mode, with gamers controlling Rayman, Globox, and two teensies, who will have the same abilities in order to keep things fair.

The levels in Rayman Origins are designed both for single-player and multiplayer modes, but no word yet whether an online co-op mode is also included.

Expect Rayman Origins to appear as a retail release at the end of the year for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, while a Nintendo 3DS version is also possible, but more details are certain to be showcased at next month's E3 conference.
