The egg is kept a close eye on by a security guard, several video cameras

Remember that piece of news about how cranes are now once again nesting in South England after their being declared extinct in this region back in the 1600s?

Well, it appears that an egg laid by these birds is now quite the local celebrity. And by this I mean that conservationists are so enthusiastic about its arrival, that they have set up round-the-clock protection for it.

Long story short, the egg is kept a close eye on by a 24-hour security guard. As well as this, a ring of video cameras has been installed so as to record anything happening in and close to these cranes' nesting area.

“Cranes are an iconic part of British wildlife and one that was all but lost for centuries. There is a long way to go before cranes become widespread again, but it is absolutely momentous to see this egg laid at Slimbridge,” conservationist Nigel Jarrett reportedly said.

Given all the attention that this egg is getting, I for one cannot even begin to imagine what will happen once the baby crane decides to hatch.
