14 DAY TRIAL // Although Microsoft presented the Origami UMPC project as a revolution in the field of mobile PCs, few companies have decided to provide such ultra-portable devices. We only heard of Microsoft's UMPC prototypes and Samsung's Vista UMPC, but this was about six months ago. However, an obscure company known as Raon is now presenting their own UMPC concept, bringing hope to the development of the Origami project.
The latest UMPC from Raon is named Everun because it is able to run for 7 hours, using the standard battery pack, or for as much as 12 hours , using the enhanced battery that adds 100 g to the total weight of the device. Raon claims that their new UMPC model offers users a realistic one-charge-per-day experience. As far as portability goes, customers may be pleased to find out that the Everun UMPC measures 170 x 83 x 25 mm and weighs approximately 460-500g without the included enhanced battery. It also features the latest in WLAN, Bluetooth and Ethernet connections.
In order to help advanced data protection, Raon allows users to choose among an SSD and an HDD solution. Thus, the Everun can be purchased with a 6GB SSD, a 60GB standard HDD, or both. The SSD solution coupled with the AMD LX900 CPU running at 600 MHz will greatly reduce power consumption and extend battery life. The UMPC comes equipped with up to 1GB of RAM, but due to its power-saving orientation, this won't be regarded as a gaming rig. Instead, it should be able to handle Office applications and multimedia content, running a Windows XP Home OS.
Regarding design and features, Everun adds an integrated QWERTY keyboard on the right of the screen and function keys on the left, departing a bit from the original UMPC prototypes. The 4.8" wide aspect ratio 800x480 touchscreen works in portrait or landscape mode, switching instantly between the two viewing modes. Menu navigation and interaction is simplified by the integrated optical touchmouse and navigation key.
According to Dynamism.com the price for the Everun UMPC should be ranging between $600-900.
