The game might no longer be focused on a terrorist threat

Video game publisher Ubisoft says that Rainbow 6: Patriots was affected by problems during the development process and needed to be remade but is currently benefiting from a new focus on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.

Laurent Detoc, the president of the North American division of the company, tells IGN that, "There’s an editorial group in Ubisoft, a big group, very influential. If the game is not good enough, they say it’s not good enough. Most of the time, the team will say, 'yeah, I know'. But sometimes they want to continue in a direction where you say, 'no, it’s not going to work'."

He adds, "Rainbow had to be remade. Now they’re going to have the benefit of the new consoles, if and when it comes out. It’s one of those examples where you try, it doesn’t work, you try again. If it doesn’t work, we’re not going to bring it to you."

Rainbow 6: Patriots was first announced in 2011 and very little of the plot or the actual gameplay was revealed to the public.

Because no information was given to fans for a long period, a lot of them believed the game had been canceled, but during this year's E3 conference Ubisoft said that it still had long term plans for it.

Detoc also says that the re-design process was extensive and suggested that the resulting game might no longer be called Patriots and might not involve terrorists in any way.

The executive suggested that mercenaries might be the new theme of the shooter.

The Rainbow 6 series was originally based on a Tom Clancy concept and was more focused on tactics and patience than on straight up action.

It's unclear whether the new incarnation of Patriots is designed to return the franchise to its roots or to make it more appealing to modern players.
