Rain World is a two-dimensional platformer set in a world where civilized inhabitants are long extinct, leaving behind only the husks of buildings and industry.

Players will take control of the Slugcat, a critter that has to hunt for food during the dangerous rainy season, while keeping an eye out for predators and the various hazards left behind by the alien population.

The indie game involving nomadic slug-cats is inspired by 16-bit era classics, and looks and feels accordingly, with fast-paced platforming action set to a background that has the SNES-era aesthetic.

According to developer Joar Jakobsson, a large focus of the development process has been on developing enemy critter AI, resulting in cunning and vicious animals that seek to make a meal out of you and are always out hunting.

The slugcat is situated at the middle of the food chain, and is able to throw projectiles at predators, shimmy along hand-holds, sneak around tunnels, climb and jump in order to navigate the desolate environment.

The game's creators have just started the Project Rain World Kickstarter campaign and have already reached their primary intended goal. The survival platformer is also featured on Steam Greenlight, aiming to reach a broader audience.

The developers stated that if Rain World overshot by a lot on Kickstarter, they would begin working on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions right away. The game is currently in a playable alpha state, with work still being done on fleshing out the narrative elements, and still allowing for growth.

Rain World has been in development for over three years and a release is planned for fall 2014, for PC and Mac.
