Panzer Corps is a title that takes the Panzer General concept and aims to update it and make it more accessible while keeping the attention to detail and the tactical calculus that made the original such a hit.

The game gives players a number of units, all belonging to the Germany Army and its various allies of World War II, and a number of cities that need to be controlled.

Depending on the mission the player can also make some pre-battle preparations, like getting some upgrades for important units or bringing some reinforcements in to bolster one area of the battle space.

Panzer Corps then plays like a sort of tactical puzzle where it's crucial to understand the role of each of the units and how they can be used in a combined arms manner to take out the defenses of the enemy and get control of his cities.

I played three scenarios to completion so far on the Normal difficulty and I have to say that Panzer Corps can be pretty hard, especially when one makes mistakes like leaving units exposed or failing to reinforce critical spots in the battle line.

The initial units of the German Army might seem impressive, but the tanks were rather fragile and the infantry and artillery often lacked mobility so the player needs, following in the steps of the great German generals of the war, to use tactical surprises and overwhelming force at narrow points in the front to break through the Artificial Intelligence lines and get to objectives.

I quite liked the Panzer General series back in my early gaming days and playing Panzer Corps is a trip back through time in some respects, but with a much better interface, more information offered about units and their roles and, until now, a better computer opponent.

Panzer Corps has been created by The Lorzds Game Studio and is published by Slitherine and can be obtained via digital download from the official site and can also be ordered as a physical copy.
