Brian May says Freddie Mercury biopic with Sacha Baron Cohen is coming along just wonderfully

In September last year, confirmation came that a movie based on Freddie Mercury’s life and the formative years of Queen was finally in the making. Queen guitarist Brian May is now offering the first details on it.

As we also noted on the occasion, British actor Sacha Baron Cohen has been attached to the part. Even though he may not look like he’s able to pull it off, assurances were offered at the time that he was more than suitable for the part.

May says the same thing now, hinting that Cohen is preparing for the performance of his lifetime, even though he’s not saying that much in terms of dishing out the details.

In a post simply called “Queen-related activity in 2011” on his official website, May updates the fans on what they’re to expect this year, and this includes re-mastered CDs, a dedicated exhibition, the Mercury biopic and a “We Will Rock You” movie.

As far as the biopic is concerned, it’s coming along just nicely – Freddie himself would be proud to see Cohen playing him, May says.

“Work is now fully under way for the much-vaunted feature film on the life of Freddie,” May says in the aforementioned post, dated January 10.

“Peter Morgan has delivered a first draft of the movie, which everyone is very excited about, and Sacha Baron Cohen is chomping at the bit to get into the role, in a way which certainly would delight Freddie!” May gushes.

He wouldn’t say more about the much-hyped production but, after so many months of dead silence, even this tidbit is enough to please fans.

“The whole team now working on preparing for a shoot later this year, and a release in the late Autumn of 2012,” May also says.

There’s also another movie in the making, also in early production stages.

“We are also laying the foundations for WWRY THE MOVIE, and again, we already have a great script for it from Ben,” the guitarist adds, before thanking fans for the continued love and support for 40 years.
