The entire experience is built around player choice

The development team at Remedy working on the upcoming Quantum Break says that it is creating a new system called junction points, which will allow players to experience certain segments of the game from the perspective of the villain.

Sam Lake, the creative director at the studio, tells Game Informer that, “You get to play Paul Serene during the junction moments and make these choices. We want to make even the bad guy a deep, complex character that you will see different sides of. You will understand why he’s doing what he’s doing.”

The developer compares the game to the structure of the original Die Hard, where the villain played by Alan Rickman sometimes becomes more important than the hero created by Bruce Willis.

Lake also believes that games need to have more interactivity and Remedy is using the junction points to give players an unusual perspective on the game world.

The main enemy in Quantum Break has the ability to see glimpses of possible futures and gamers can explore them and get ready for their effects when they switch to controlling the good guys.

Lake adds, “At the end of each act of the game, you actually get to play him during these junction moments. You get to explore and discover these glimpses of different futures, and you get to make the choice. Which of these two futures that are presented will come to pass?”

Remedy makes it clear that the information players obtain is limited and the game will have plenty of surprises in store.

The title is designed to offer a complex trans-media experience that will include a television show that’s directly based on player choice.

Quantum Break is an Xbox One exclusive title that will be launched at some point in 2014 and more details could be offered during the VGX event on December 6.
