Quake Live on Steam has just received a fresh update, this time bringing forth, in addition to new arenas, map rotation, medals, and other improvements, the support for Steam Trading Cards, which include great artwork and can be used to craft badges and earn other things.

Quake Live launched quite some time ago but only recently did the free-to-play shooter reach the Steam digital distribution service from Valve, where many people decided to try it out and see if the old-school title still managed to deliver a fun time.

Patch 22 brings Steam Trading Cards

Since its arrival on the service, quite a few different patches have been released by the team at id Software, and now the latest one, update 22, is available for download, according to the official announcement on the forums.

The big patch includes a wide variety of things, starting with probably one of the most important for Steam users, which is the support for trading cards. 11 cards can be dropped for players and they include 10 character portraits made by John Mueller, the artist behind the official Quake 3 Arena Visor painting. The cards can be traded, sold, or collected, and then crafted into a special badge. This also nets players emoticons, profile backgrounds, or coupons.

Plenty of other things are also included

Quake Live update 22 also brings forth new map rotations, as the old monthly system is retiring in favor of one that has less restrictions.

"We are retiring our Monthly Standard Map Rotation system, all maps are now free for all users at all times. All maps (with the exclusion of Small CA and large Terra maps) are available on public servers, including newly released arenas, and come up for vote in the end-game subscriber voting portal. Small CA and Terra maps are not included due to their sizes, but these maps remain available for selection by pro users via Create Match," the studio explains.

Of course, there are also new arenas available in the patch called Bitter Embrace, Castle Deathstalker, Death of Glory, Drunken Mummy, Industrial Revolution, Ragnarok, Refinery, Satanic, Solarium, and Sorrow.

There's a new medal called Perforated that's awarded when you telefrag an enemy, while the maximum time between weapon shots for the Combokill medal has been reduced from 3 to 1.5 seconds.

Plenty of other changes regarding to the voice over, not to mention the actual mechanics of the free-to-play shooter, have also been added via the new update, so check out the full changelog below by clicking the Show Changelog button.

The new patch is already available for download via the Steam client.
