The smartphone ships with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, but it’s upgradeable to KitKat

Indian OEM XOLO silently released three Android smartphones this week, the A500s Lite, Q600s and the Q1200. The latter is the better-featured of the three, but it’s still a mid-range handset that will probably have a hard time becoming popular among customers in India.

The first downside of the XOLO Q1200 would be the fact that it comes with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system out of the box, which is kind of old for a smartphone in this price range.

Speaking of which, the Q1200 is now available for purchase in India only via Snapdeal for Rs 14,999 outright, which is about $255 or €185.

The good news is XOLO seems to have confirmed that the Q1200 will eventually receive an Android 4.4.2 KitKat upgrade at some point. This is a good thing if executed correctly. XOLO doesn’t have a good reputation when it comes to updates, which are usually full of bugs.

Talking about specs, XOLO Q1200 is a bit low on hardware for the price XOLO is asking. For example, the smartphone is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, which is complemented by 1GB of RAM and only 8GB of internal memory.

While these are all specs that usually go into mid-range Android smartphones, they are mostly preferred for the lower side of these mid-ranged handsets, which are priced cheaper.

At least, the phone offers dual-SIM capability with dual standby support. It also comes with a range of connectivity options, including 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS with A-GPS and USB on-the-go.

Another positive aspect about the Q1200 is the fact that it packs an enhanced 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus, LED flash, full HD (1080p) video recording and Sony Exmor R sensor. There’s also a secondary 2-megapixel camera in the front for video calls.

But the best feature included in the XOLO Q1200 is the large 5-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display that supports HD (720p) resolution and features Corning Gorilla Glass 3 coating for extra protection.

Other than that, the smartphone also comes with a 2000 mAh battery which has yet to be rated by the manufacturer, FM Radio, 3.5mm audio jack and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

Anyway, XOLO has yet to make the smartphone official, but those who wish to own the Q1200 should not expect for the official word, as that may never come. We’ll update the news when XOLO decides to go official with the device.
