QStar Technologies has issued an official report announcing that it has updated its flagship product, HSM. The archive platform is reportedly now compatible with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, although QStar's report mentions “Mc OS X 10.5,” not “Mac OS X 10.6,” the real version number for Apple's upcoming Snow Leopard.

“QStar has been providing storage management software and solutions for many years and we have been watching the growth of Apple's publishing, graphic arts, video editing and medical imaging markets with great interest,” Riccardo Finotti, CEO at QStar, explained. “The Mac enterprise and server environment is becoming increasingly sophisticated and its storage needs have grown exponentially. From a storage and data management perspective, Apple users are struggling with the same concerns as traditional Windows, UNIX and Linux customers. Relentless data growth, risk management, compliance and cost containment are business critical issues that QStar helps companies to address. QStar's HSM archive platform is responding to the growing demand among Apple customers for enterprise class storage,” he said.

HSM is aimed at storage systems, being equipped with tools that can be used to manage data movement between multiple tiers of storage, both online and offline. The software supports storage technologies including DVD-RAM, BD, CAS, and PDD. The platform now supports mixed RAID for the first time, as well as Blu-ray and tape technologies. The app is most suitable for storage-intensive programs, as it can manage over a petabyte (approximately one quadrillion bytes, or 1024 terabytes) of data space. HSM is used in publishing, graphic design, audio and video editing, and even medical imaging.

“We see the availability of our HSM platform for Mac OS X as a major industry milestone,” Steve Tongish, global marketing director for QStar, commented. “We believe that QStar is the first company to bring an enterprise-class archive solution to the Apple community, supporting high capacity RAID subsystems in combination with the latest generation Blu-ray and LTO libraries. HSM for Mac provides an excellent platform for storage intensive applications where Apple dominates. This includes any applications where high value data and long term retention are critical to the business such as: publishing, graphics design, audio/video editing and medical imaging, to name just a few,” Tongish added.
