QNAP, a company that is specialized in providing a complete range of external storage solutions, has recently updated its portfolio with the introduction of the new TS-439U-RP and TS-439U-SP rack-mountable NAS servers. The new solutions are designed for the small and medium business users, featuring a 4-bay design that can be equipped with up to four 3.5-inch SATA hard disk drives, or even four 2.5-inch SATA HDDs, thanks to the company's recently announced support for both storage medium form factors.

Based on Intel's low-power Atom 1.6GHz processors, the new solutions can provide users with an impressive number of features and support for a large 8TB storage solution, using 2TB drives. Both solutions are featured with 1GB of DDR2 memory and are said to be capable of providing users with transfer speeds of 87.3MB/s for FTP reads, using a RAID 5 configuration. They are equipped with dual Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet ports, 3 USB 2.0 with support for external storage, USB printer, USB UPS and more.

The 1U rackmount solutions have also been featured with a series of other software technologies, like support for RAID 0/1/5/6/5+ hot spare and JBOD, iSCSI Target service with Thin Provisioning and a number of security-related features like AES 256-bit encryption, policy-based IP blocking, secure FTP, encrypted remote application for backing up the data on the NAS server to another NAS server on the network, email and SMS alerts in the case of NAS server fail.

The main difference between the two is that the RP model has been featured with a redundant power supply, while the SP model comes with a single power supply. For the latter, users will be able to add their own additional redundant power supply, without the need for a system shutdown. Unfortunately, the Taiwanese company is yet to announce details about the new solutions, regarding pricing. The two are expected to become available later this month.
