QNAP Systems, one of the world's leading vendors of external storage solutions, has just announced that it will be providing its customers with support for smaller, 2.5-inch hard drives, offering them a broader choice for expanding their storage solutions. This new option has been made available for the company's line of Turbo NAS, high-performance network attached storage servers, powered by Intel's x86 processors. The addition of this option is expected to provide users with a wider array of upgrade options for their Turbo NAS storage solutions.

“QNAP is giving users more choices when it comes to drive selection,” said Meiji Chang, CEO of QNAP Systems, Inc. “Flexibility and lower power consumption are always welcome features for our customers,” Mr. Chang added.

According to QNAP, the addition of this new option for its customers is understandable, given the increased number of 2.5-inch hard drives available on the market, due to “softness in the notebook PC market.” Aside from providing users with a wider range of choices when it comes to upgrading their NAS storage, the 2.5-inch hard drives are considered a solution that can deliver solid performance but with a much lower power consumption.

There are a number of users who will be able to take advantage of the 2.5-inch hard drive support announced by QNAP today. According to the Taiwanese company, several Intel-based Turbo NAS servers have this feature, including TS-239 Pro, TS-439 Pro, TS-509 Pro, TS-639 Pro, and TS-809 Pro. In addition, the vendor also mentioned the TS-809-RP 2U rack mount Turbo NAS server as being compatible with the new 2.5-inch hard drive support feature. This solution is built on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with a redundant power supply, making the 2.5-inch HDD support a noteworthy feature.
