The latest version of PwnageTool (4.3.3.1) can jailbreak iOS 4.2.2. builds (8F305) targeting the Apple TV second generation, according to an update from the infamous iPhone Dev Team today.

One of the more vocal members of the hacker group, Musclenerd tweeted today that thanks to i0n1c’s ‘untethered’ exploit, the iOS 4.3 / 4.2.2 AppleTV 2G update is jailbreakable.

The team followed with a post on their blog, confirming support for the new firmware.

“Apple released a minor update to iOS 4.3 for AppleTV2G (the IPSW name still says 4.3, but the build version changed from 8F202 to 8F305),” the iPhone Dev Team writes.

They claim “@i0n1c was once again able to quickly port his original 4.3.1 untether (the exploit that wouldn’t die!) to this version.”

The team warns that “If you do feel like updating to the ‘new’ 4.3, you’ll need to drop this bundle into the correct folder in PwnageTool.app.”

A number of tutorials are available on the web for those who wish to carry out the task, according to the tinkerers. As usual, their blog is also a good place to start a search, they note.

The newest Apple TV software update addresses issues where audio was not output when playing certain video content, where video was not displayed when handling some formats, and also fixes an issue in which the description information was not displayed for some movies.

The update also improves the performance on fast-forwarding and rewinding live events, and addresses an issue where YouTube subscription videos were not ordered by date.

iOS 4.2.2 or 4.3 for Apple TV 2G can be obtained from within the General Settings menu of the set-top box.

Alternately, users can download the IPSW manually from this link and employ PwnageTool to create a custom update file to which they can restore their device and have it boot jailbroken.
