A puppy that is only a few months old came dangerously close to being put to sleep after it was discovered that it was an illegal immigrant, and his owner, 16-year-old Eleanor Donkin, admits that she was terrified at the thought of losing her beloved pet.

According to Mirror, the girl, who now lives in Northumberland, England, got the Maltese terrier pup from a businessman by the name John Graham.

After bonding with Milo for about three weeks, the girl and her mom received a visit from officials working with Trading Standards, who told them that the pooch had illegally been brought into the country all the way from Holland.

More precisely, its passport was a fake one, and the dog had not been given its rabies injection before being imported. Hence, Milo had to be separated from its new family, and put into quarantine.

Of the 9 other dogs that were brought into England by said businessman, two were put to sleep after authorities discovered that their arrival in the country was not in accordance with existing laws, and one other passed away after becoming ill.

Therefore, 16-year-old Eleanor feared that she too might lose Milo. More so given the fact that one of the officials who came and took it away from her told her that that might happen.

“They said he might have to be put down. I didn’t want anyone to take Milo from me but I knew I had to protect mum and I too,” the girl recollects.

Luckily, Milo managed to sort out its issues with customs, got all the shots it needed, and was eventually returned to the Donkin family.

Eleanor could not be happier, and says that, “I couldn’t imagine life without my little ball of fur. We’re delighted to have him back.”
