A pumpkin grower from Alaska is disappointed over missing the chance to get his fifth state record for growing the largest pumpkin.

J.D. Megchelsen presented a 1,500 pound (680 kg) pumpkin to organizers at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer yearly competition.

However, his fruit has a hole the size of a thumb in it. According to contest regulations, he cannot bring it in. Growers cannot sign in with pumpkins which have holes or cracks that reach the cavity.

According to the Peninsula Clarion, the gardener from Nikiski was planning on breaking his own record, set with a 1,287 pounder (583 kg) in 2011.

“It’s just killing him. [...] He eats, sleeps and dreams pumpkins. All he does is pumpkins,” Megchelsen’s sister-in-law, Pam Elkins, comments.
