Social media is responsible for spreading lies again, rep says

Singer Daddy Yankee has been plagued by gay rumors for quite some time now but he’s never issued a statement to confirm them. A publicist for the star says that we should not believe everything that we read online.

Especially if it’s in reference to Daddy Yankee’s reported gay orientation.

The Los Angeles Times reports that, for the past several days, a photo of a man looking like Daddy Yankee kissing another man has been making the rounds.

It was picked up by various media outlets as legit and run as such. The singer himself is reported to have issued a statement to confirm that he was, in fact, gay.

“I am a human being like any other, with virtues and defects, and I don't believe that this is a defect,” he was quoted as saying in a statement that also included a plea for the media to respect his and his family’s privacy.

It’s all a lie, his publicist tells Billboard: Daddy Yankee is not gay, he’s never “confirmed” it and his fans should know better than to believe everything they read online, especially on social media.

“Online blogs and social media are once again to blame for the spread of false news reports,” Mayna Nevarez says.

“Which other media outlets have also shared regarding a public figure. The reports circulating regarding Daddy Yankee's declaration of homosexuality was falsely written by an online outlet known for fabricating false information and spreading it through social media sites,” the rep adds, refusing to pinpoint the source of the malicious rumor.

You’d think that such a statement would be enough to squash rumors about Daddy Yankee’s orientation but a simple search online proves that this is far from the case.

As of now, there’s still talk online that the “Gasolina” star really is gay and that the statement from his publicist is just a belated attempt at image control by his PR people.
