Proxmox VE (Virtual Environment) 3.3 is an easy-to-use open source virtualization platform for running Virtual Appliances and Virtual Machines. It has just been updated and the developers have made quite a few changes.

The latest version of Proxmox VE is quite a big one and that can be easily seen from what developers have noted in the official announcement. The latest iteration is very much focused on security, and a number of new features, like two-factor authentication, have been added.

It's been quite a while since the previous Proxmox VE update, which was released back in March, but it's been even longer since the last major new version. There are so many new things that it's hard to count them all, but we'll try to peruse the most important ones.

What's new in the latest Proxmox VE

"The series of new features focus on security and include the Proxmox VE Firewall and two-factor authentication. A HTML5 console, the ZFS storage plugin and the Proxmox VE Mobile touch interface extend the range of use. Many package updates are included in the release."

"It has a distributed nature and is designed to protect the whole IT infrastructure. Completely integrated into the web-GUI and the cluster stack, it allows the user to setup firewall rules for all hosts, the cluster, virtual machines and containers. To keep these tasks simple, the Proxmox VE Firewall comes with features like firewall macros, security groups, IP sets and aliases," say the developers in the official announcement.

According to the changelog, the newly-integrated two-factor authentication will add an extra layer of security to Proxmox VE, the login with a one-time password (OTP) can be enabled in the username/password interface login, YubiKey from Yubico and Time Based One-Time Passwords (with OATH) authentication methods have been implemented, the new HTML5 console (noVNC) is set as the default in Proxmox VE 3.3, and a touch interface designed specifically for the use on mobile devices (phones and tablets) has been added.

Also, the qemu package is now at version 2.1.0, the new Proxmox VE Firewall has been implemented, the aacraid, arcmsr, netxtreme2, ixgbe, igb, megaraid_sas, and e1000e drivers have been added, the Linux kernel has been updated to version 3.10.0-17, and numerous other packages have been updated as well.

Proxmox VE (Virtual Environment) is an open source server Virtualization Platform that is based on KVM and OpenVZ, which in fact are Kernel-based Virtual Machines and container-based virtualization.
