During last weekend's Spike TV Video Game Awards, Activision has revealed what most gamers already knew: the existence of Prototype 2.

The game's announcement was previewed by a teaser campaign, called Murder Your Maker, which already hinted heavily that a sequel to Prototype will be revealed.

The full video released during the Video Game Awards showcased a brand new main character, Army Sergeant James Heller, who wants to destroy the main protagonist of the original Prototype, Alex Mercer.

The tagline of the whole game seems to be "to kill a monster … you must become one," hinting that Heller has also gained super powers, in order to be a match for the powerful Mercer.

The game is developed by Radical Entertainment, the same company that worked on the original, and the team promises to deliver "an even bigger and better experience" than the first one.

Even if this announcement came as a surprise for some gamers, Radical boss Ken Rosman revealed that sales and fan feedback made Prototype 2 a certainty.

"When Prototype surpassed two million units we knew gamers would want a sequel to find out what happens next with Alex Mercer."

"The team here at Radical is sincerely grateful to the fans and we are laser focused on delivering an even bigger and better experience with Prototype 2."

As of right now, Prototype 2 is slated to appear sometime in 2012, for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

While delivering a pretty decent open-world experience, the original Prototype was eclipsed by inFamous, a similar game developed by Sucker Punch exclusively for the PlayStation 3.

Now, seeing as how inFamous 2 is set to appear sometime next year, it seems that Prototype 2 will have a clear window to showcase its own features in 2012.
