ProteMac has announced ProteMac Meter, a network traffic logger that allows users of OS X (10.4 Tiger) or later to monitor all internet and network traffic on their computers. The software displays information such as what was transmitted and where, for a more accurate view of the Internet experience.

On a more detailed feature scale, ProtecMac Meter deals with all traffic initiated by software applications, services, websites etc. This is “critical” for security-aware users, the company says. It does so through the capability to audit what flows in and out of every piece of software, using real-time processes (applications and services) monitoring, showing the history of every network activity.

Each connection is also detailed. Users can gain rapid knowledge of stuff like application network connections, host availability, remote host name, amounts of incoming and outgoing traffic through connection or application, timestamps of the first and last activity, application that initiated or accepted this connection, full path to the application the process belongs to, and more. To see an upload / download speed graph, as well as traffic totals, users have a handy traffic summary indicator at their disposal.

Even inexperienced Mac users should find monitoring their Internet traffic easy, using ProteMac, the makers claim, by viewing established connections, network and per application traffic over a certain period, setup various notifications and other areas. Seeing how a download / upload process is doing is as easy as using ProteMac Meter from the floating diagrams in the menubar.

Currently at its first official release (version 1.0), ProteMac Meter boasts a great deal of features, including the ability to display chart and table of the real time activity of a network application or connection; real time network traffic usage for each application on your Mac; real time network traffic summary for your Mac; real time network speed for your Mac.

The software also provides clear graphical and numerical network traffic details, while each session, including start/stop time, application, remote address/port, total transferred bytes and average speed, is logged. ProteMac Meter even monitors multiple network connection interfaces at the same time.

A demo version of ProteMac Meter is available here for free download. For a full list of features, head over to the developer's website.
