Apple has updated iTunes Connect to let developers know that promo codes can now be generated for Mac applications distributed through the Mac App Store. Previously, such codes could only redeem iOS apps.

“You can now generate promo codes for your Mac apps in iTunes Connect,” Apple states in the updated iTunes Connect backend.

“These promo codes can be redeemed in any Mac App Store worldwide. For each version of your app, you can request up to 50 promo codes,” Apple is telling registered developers.

The company adds that “Promo codes can now be generated for Mac OS X apps and redeemed through any Mac App Store internationally.”

Developers looking to create giveaways for their apps, or to have a website like Softpedia review their app should be extremely pleased with the news, given that promo codes makes it easy to “redeem” an application.

As with iOS promo codes, Mac promo codes will have users access the “redeem” tab in the Mac App Store application and enter their code to have the app automatically downloaded and installed on their computer with a few clicks.

Also worth noting is that promo code redeeming, for most of its existence, has been available to U.S. residents only.

Recently, Apple opened promo codes to all international App Store, though Softpedia has found that such codes still don’t work in South-Eastern Europe (Romania), following Apple’s official announcement.

Apple also did not respond to our inquiry on the matter.

Available for Snow Leopard users through Software Update as part of Mac OS X 10.6.6, the Mac App Store offers apps in Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity, Utilities and other categories.

Apps are stacked in “new and noteworthy” columns, or users can find out “what’s hot”, see “staff favorites”, search categories and look up top charts for paid and free apps, as well as user ratings and reviews, just like they do with the iOS App Store.
