The company wants to use the system in innovative ways

Video game developer and publisher Square Enix announces that it is working on a new architecture for cloud gaming, currently called Project Flare, which is designed to greatly improve performance in top-end titles and will be launched in two or three years.

Jacob Navok, the director of business development at the company, is quoted by VG247 as saying that the system he is working on will be superior to that offered by other cloud-based services like Gaikai or OnLive.

He states, “They weren’t actually changing anything about it. There was a shift in the distribution model, there was a shift in the business, but there wasn’t a shift in the game design. It wasn’t a shift in technology.”

To show off the power of the new Project Flare, Square Enix has shown a stack of boxes created in Deus Ex: Human Revolution that, when one was shot off, fell in different directions using a complex physics system.

The company claims that no gaming console and no PC configuration that currently exists would be able to deliver the same realistic experience.

Navok adds, “Now we’re not saying the next Deus Ex game is going to be Deus Ex: Boxes, but you can imagine what we could do if these weren’t just boxes but people or NPCs or enemy characters or lots and lots of robots flying. We could possibly achieve real-time battles that look like battles in the Lord of the Rings movies.”

Square Enix wants to use the new Project Flare tech to power both Deus Ex and a new generation of Final Fantasy.

The publisher has announced that it is working on a Universe concept for the cyberpunk title, which will use video games, other media and new technologies to tell a new story focused on conspiracies and player choice.
