Darren Monahan, the chief information officer and producer at developer Obsidian, says that the Kickstarter-funded Project Eternity is close to the end of its prototype phase.

This means that the team has all the core mechanics, aka pillars, of the game actually working and that the entire concept of the world and the narrative is coherent and can be implemented using the tools Obsidian plans to use.

The elements of the game that have been created include character movement and combat, basic role-playing game mechanics and environments.

Darren Monahan states, “we are absolutely trucking along. We’ve recently added several new concept artists to the team, two longtime Obsidian designers have also come on board (more on them later!), and we are hiring for other positions too.”

A prototype review for Project Eternity is set for the coming weeks and the team will evaluate whether they have managed to recapture the elements that powered the success of Infinity Engine titles.

Obsidian is not planning on updating the official forums with new game information during the coming week because it will be occupied with the final elements of the prototype stage.

After that, more updates are planned from Josh Sawyer, the project director and lead designer, Rob Nesler, the art director, Adam Brennecke, lead programmer, Chris Avellone, the creative director and George Zeits, the main writer on Project Eternity.

Obsidian has been sharing a lot of the development process for its new game with the community and it plans to keep fans involved as more decisions are made.

Project Eternity will use classic party-based role-playing game mechanics, with an entirely new game world for players to explore and a number of decisions to make in order to determine its final state.

The game is expected to launch during the fall of 2014.
