Publisher Capcom and developer Level-5 have offered a bit of detail about their upcoming cross over game Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, saying that the new experience will be set in the middle of a medieval city with “surreal” elements, with the two characters set to be working together to solve a grand mystery.

The announcement of the collaboration between the two companies has been greeted with excitement by fans of the two series and the developers are quick to offer more information in order to get their interest up.

It seems that other characters from both the franchises will make appearances in Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright and it seems that the two characters will be mostly collaborating, making the “versus” in the working title a bit hard to justify.

Gamers will probably see a lot of complex puzzles and some light adventure role playing as Layton and Phoenix Wright work to understand how they were transported to the medieval city and what mysteries it hides.

The two companies have also offered information on the sale of their two series, justifying the choice to put the professor ahead of the attorney in the game title.

Since it was introduced as a character in the early days of 2007 Layton managed to sell more than 9.5 million copies of the game he has powered worldwide, with the United States set to get access to Professor Layton and the Unwound Future during November.

Capcom says that the Phoenix Wright series has by comparison sold more than 3.9 million units since it was created in 2001.

Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright is set to be created for the Nintendo 3DS handheld, which will allow players to experience full three dimensional titles without the use of any specialized glasses, and at the moment neither Capcom nor Level-5 is talking about a launch date.
