Regardless of how good their photo and video capture devices are, the owners of Digital SLR cameras and professional HD video cameras and video recorders can be limited to less than stellar performance if the memory cards used aren't good enough.

That is to say, not all memory cards have a high enough writing speed to cope with high-quality video recording and speedy burst photography.

Maxell Professional Media is proud to introduce a memory card that can handle things, as it bears UHS-I rating (Speed Class 1).

The newcomer belongs to the Maxell's Professional Plus and was "specifically developed to meet the stringent needs of broadcast, video, and post-production professionals who require storage options."

"It is crucial that our customers be provided with data storage options that are optimized for professional use," said Patricia Byrne, senior marketing manager for Maxell.

"The SDHC UHS-I cards accomplish that goal on every performance level, and we are happy to add it to Maxell's family of broadcast products."

The Professional SD Card is a Full Class 10 product, which means that it has read speeds of up to 95 MB/s and writing speeds of 45 MB/s.

Quite a bit better than normal SDHC cards, thanks to better hardware and optimizations. Then again, professionals demand no less.

As for capacity, there are actually two options, so we suppose it would be accurate to say that Maxell launched two memory cards, not one: 16 GB and 32 GB.

In that order, they are priced at $37.83 (29.31 – 37.83 Euro) and $72.99 (56.55 – 72.99 Euro). Not the highest prices, and not the lowest we've ever seen either.

There will be competition of course, from the likes of Kingmax Pro Extreme, among many others, but that only means freedom of choice and, if we're lucky, a mild price war that will drive tags down.
