Officers say the gun was the right shape and size, looked very much like the real deal

An inmate now finds himself in the Care and Separation unit of HMP Bedford, a men's prison in Bedfordshire, UK, after attempting to use a fake gun to break free from jail and failing in the process.

Information shared with the public says that, as part of his escape plan, the man stole several bars of soap, which he carefully stashed in his cell looking to turn them into a fake gun.

Interestingly enough, it looks like the inmate, whose name has not yet been shared with the public, actually managed to see this part of his fairly peculiar escape plan through, Metro informs.

Thus, officers at HMP Bedford claim the man did put together the soap bars and carved them in such a way that the resulting object had the right shape and size to be confused with the real deal when looked at from afar.

“The soap gun had been lovingly crafted and was the right shape and size. Painted black, it would have been impossible to distinguish from a proper pistol,” an inside source for HMP Bedford reportedly explains in a statement.

The only problem is that, as ingenious and as creative as this inmate was when working on his escape plan, he wasn't exactly what some would call courageous when the time came for him to actually use the fake soap gun to break free.

Thus, word has it that, rather than trying to escape from behind bars, the man settled for handing the gun over to officers in charge of managing the men's prison. Since he could have easily disposed of it by taking a bath, it is unclear why he did so.

What is known is that, after turning in the soap gun and confessing his plan, the man was placed in the Care and Separation unit, where he will remain for quite a while. “The item was confiscated and the – prisoner put in the Care and Separation unit,” the case report reads.

Truth be told, this man did not come up with the idea to turn soap bars into a fake gun and attempt to scare guardians into letting him walk free all on his own. On the contrary, he was inspired by the story of John Dillinger, a bank robber in the US, who did something similar in the 1930s.

The only difference is that John Dillinger's fake gun was made of painted wood and not soap, and that the bank robber actually used it to escape Lake County Jail in Indiana, steal the local sheriff's car, and make a getaway.
