When eyes were not glued to Katherine Middleton’s superb wedding gown and her even more gorgeous smile on her wedding day to Prince William, they were going to and fro, admiring guests’ wedding gowns. Princess Beatrice’s choice of a hat has since turned into an Internet meme.

Clearly, it was not Bea’s best choice of a fascinator – at least, not if you go online and read comments about it.

The beige fascinator in question, described by many as an “octopus in attack mode,” was designed by London milliner Philip Treacy, whose creations have already appeared on “SATC,” and who is a favorite of stars like Sarah Jessica Parker and Victoria Beckham.

Whether Treacy does good work (which he normal does, fashion gurus argue) is not of the essence here: the fact that Beatrice chose that particular fascinator for the royal wedding is what’s more important.

As the Daily Mail notes, the hat has become a very popular meme online, with users coming up with the most varied uses for it, including a weapon in “Star Trek” or a portal to another world.

Star Trek weapon, cat flap and, least kindly of all, toilet bowl – Princess Beatrice’s fascinator has certainly been fascinating the internet pranksters since Friday’s ceremony.

“A Facebook site entitled Princess Beatrice’s Ridiculous Royal Wedding Hat had last night attracted 123,675 visitors so far, with one asking whether she was a new Doctor Who villain,” the Mail writes.

The article also includes photos of the hat put to various uses – other than the ones for which it was initially designed, of course.

“And other bloggers wasted no time in poking fun at the fifth in line to the throne’s Philip Treacy-designed headgear, creating a host of ‘viral’ mock-up pictures,” says the publication.

Other media outlets across the pond have also singled out Beatrice’s odd headgear, noting that, while she was never known for choosing plain-looking fascinators, this time she may have actually outdone herself.
